Become certified as a Chair Yoga Teacher

Pre-Requisite:

200-hour RTY or equivalent, be proficient in English, have reasonably good computer skills (be able to use an online platform for online classes, and join virtual classes via GoogleMeet), and have access to a working computer with fairly recent software.

Program Requirements

This 34-hour certificate program is all online.

Online Classes Required:

  • Chair Yoga-1 (CY-1) - This class was recorded as one hour per week for 8 weeks. Now, you may watch the recordings at your leisure, slow- or fast-paced, even watching all eight hours in one day. In this class, JJ teaches how to design a chair yoga class with counter poses and rest poses properly placed. There is a short quiz to take at the end, to show completion. This quiz is open-book, taken online, and must be passed with an 80% or better.

  • Chair Yoga-2 (CY-2) - This class was recorded as one hour per week for 8 weeks. Now, you may watch the recordings at your leisure, slow- or fast-paced, even watching all eight hours in one day. In this class, JJ will teach how to keep students safe, especially those who have conditions such as osteoporosis, joint issues, joint replacements, are in a wheelchair, and more. There is a short quiz to take at the end, to show completion of this requirement. This qui is open-book, taken online, and must be passed with an 80% or better.

  • Course Planning 5 (CP-5)- This class is eight pre-recorded video recordings of one-hour each. Students listen to the recordings and follow along with the handouts. At the end of the 8 lessons, take a short quiz. This requirement may be done at the student's pace.

  • Chair Yoga with JJ - To help the student understand and integrate the teachings into a class, JJ has many YouTube videos of her chair yoga classes.

  • Practicum evaluation:

    • 1-hour of experiential teaching must be recorded (with your student’s written permission). Submit a recording of at least one class of 30-minutes minimum showing you teaching chair yoga.

    • Submit two lesson plans for a chair yoga class.

    • Submit at least two reviews/evaluations by your students of your chair yoga class.

Application and Steps for Enrollment

  1. Apply for the Certificate Program using the application on this page, and submit your $80 Application Fee. Currently enrolled students in any SCHYS program, please use the application form on this page—no application fee required.

  2. Enroll in this program using the form on this page, and pay your tuition for this program (can be paid on this page). This 34-Hour program costs $340. Tuition includes the bulleted Online classes above. Currently enrolled students in SCHYS’s 300-Yoga Training Program or above will already have CP-5. Therefore, they need only CY-1 and CY-2. Chair Yoga with JJ is optional, and their cost is reduced to $170.

  3. Once all requirements are met including the Practicum Evaluation, students pay a $150 graduation/certification fee. Students graduating from another SCHYS program pay a reduced graduation/certification fee of just $75.
