Online Classes

All classes are conducted via GoToMeeting or Zoom. Faculty share their screen for many classes, so we recommend that you download the free application on your PC or phone to get the full classroom experience. Recordings, handouts, and other information for each class will be posted to  You will receive the meeting ID number for either GoToMeeting or Zoom, and the Schoology access code prior to the start date of the class. Email JJ if you have registered for class but have not received these codes. All classes are recorded and posted to Schoology.   

We require at least 6 participants to run a class - class will only be recorded if at least one other person is in the class.


If a class is cancelled for any reason (other than no one calling in), we will announce it on Schoology. The time will be made up, a class added, or we will issue a refund/credit.

Classes may be purchased for current session or past sessions. Students taking classes for credit in their training program must make a post on Schoology to the Discussion Board for each hour class, and make a comment on a colleague’s post. These Discussion Board Posts are graded for those in a SCHYS Training Program.

Bhagavad Gita

Pre-Requisite: NONE

Join JJ Gormley and classmates for enlightening discussion on the relevance of the Gita in today’s world. In this class we compare and contrast translations and various author’s commentary of the Gita. You are welcome to join, even if you have not participated in previous sessions! It is recommended that you have at least one translation of the Gita on hand during the call to read and share from.

Bridge Program/Foundations for Yoga

This class is required for all SCHYS Training Programs. These are included in SCHYS 200-Hour Training Program (as of 2019) and are a Pre-Requisite for all other SCHYS Programs including Specialty Certificate Programs.

This course can also be taken by anyone interested in learning more about philosophy and course planning—no need to join any SCHYS Program.

Student’s who complete the Bridge Program are eligible for a $100 discount when sign-up for a SCHYS Training Program.

This course is considered Foundations for Yoga and includes 5 online classes.

This classes uses, some are audio only (PH-1, CP-1), and others are video (CP-2 through CP-4). A computer will be necessary for, however the recordings may be downloaded and listened to using the schoology app on a smart phone.

Case Studies of the Yoga Therapist
from 100.00

Pre-Requisite: Students must be enrolled in Step 2 or 3 of SCHYS Yoga Therapy Training Program, be a graduate of SCHYS Yoga Therapy Training Program, or by permission from JJ Gormley.

Each week, experience how a Yoga Therapist perceives a case, brings it through the models of Yoga Therapy, applies upayam (tools), and determines contraindicated upayam. Students enrolled in SCHYS Steps 2 or 3 will be presenting cases of clients they are currently working with while JJ and participants will help understand the client through the many models of the yoga therapist (chakras, doshas, pancha mayas, etc.) and give opinions on possible samanam and sodhanam for the yoga therapist in training to consider. Graduates of SCHYS Yoga Therapy Certificate Program may also present their cases for others to learn from or to gain more opinions from faculty and peers on options for proceeding.

Those enrolled in Step 3 will be automatically enrolled in this class and expected to present their cases.

Course Planning 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6

Pre-Requisite: Courses need to be taken in order: CP1, CP2, CP3, CP4, CP5, then CP6

In these classes, JJ taught students sequencing class plans with course planning guidelines as used in the SCHYS curriculum. This includes appropriate preparatory poses, counter poses, rests, transitions, etc. The Asana Reference Manual (available for purchase) is used in these classes.

CP2 - 4 - Specifics of course planning including planning breath ratios within an asana course, how to appropriately build to particular poses as the goal pose, and how to counter appropriately. Enhancing & Elevating Your Philosophy Experience with Cynthia Snodgrass

Pre-Requisite: NONE

Join Cynthia on a journey through the worlds of India (pre-Hinduism and Hinduism). Explore ancient Vedic ceremony, dabble in the philosophy of the Upanishads, consider a few gods and goddesses, identify traditional stories found in the Epics and Classics of Sanskrit literature, and explore the concepts and practices of yantra, mantra, and tantra -- all of which enhance our understanding of yoga, its history, and all that it entails.

Introduction to the Power of Sound with Cline Owen

Sound vibrations are a powerful way to heal the body, mind, and spirit. This course introduces the basics of the power of sound and healing through chant. Cline will teach students about the principles of pronunciation, notation, breath, continuity, and the somatic experience of chanting. Students will also learn the meaning and history of chants in their cultural context. This course is for beginners interested in sound and vibrations.

Prenatal 1, 2, 3

Pre-Requisite: SCHYS 200-hour Certificate

This is an online class series of three where students will enjoy an introduction to prenatal yoga, infertility issues, and discuss yoga in the first trimester in Prenatal 1. The second session, Prenatal 2 in this series focuses on yoga in the second trimester, and the third in this series, Prenatal 3, will focus on yoga in the third trimester and post-natal yoga.

Students may be interested in obtaining their Prenatal Yoga Certificate (PYC) through SCHYS and all three of these Prenatal Online Courses are required. Students who wish to obtain their PYT and have registered and paid for that Certificate Program will be automatically enrolled in these courses, please do not register/pay here.

Substance Abuse and Addictions 1 and 2

Pre-Requisite for Substance Abuse & Addictions Specialty Certificate: C-IAYT.

The Specialty Certificate Program for Substance Abuse & Addictions is an Approved Professional Development (APD) Course by the IAYT. Those with a CIAYT will receive 30 CEUs.

Become a Certified Substance Abuse & Addictions Yoga Therapist through SCHYS. Lead faculty, JJ Gormley has designed this certificate program that will enable participants to learn about the physiology and psychology behind addictions and how yoga can be used to help. This is especially beneficial today as the opioid crisis, digital/internet, and food addictions and eating disorders are becoming more prevalent. This course will discuss these subjects and more and see the evidence-based research to support using yoga as an intervention.

Trauma Healing Yoga 1 and 2

Pre-Requisite for Online THY1: SCHYS Step 1 or by permission from JJ

Pre-Requisite for Online THY2: THY1

Pre-Requisite for Trauma Healing Yoga Specialty Certificate: C-IAYT.

This is an online class series of two where students will learn to use yoga’s tools to help those who have experienced trauma in their life. In Trauma Healing 1, students will enjoy an introduction to language and specific ideas for teaching yoga to this population in general and veterans specifically. During Trauma Healing 2, we will focus on women and children recovering from trauma, as well as families of those who have trauma.

Students who wish to join SCHYS’s Trauma Healing Yoga Certificate Program, of which these two online classes are required, may register and pay for the certificate program ($300) and then will be automatically enrolled in these two online classes (THY1 and THY2)—please do not register for the online classes separately or in addition to the Trauma Healing Certificate Program.

Vedic Chanting for Yoga Therapy with Cline Owen

Pre-Requisite: Intro to Vedic Chanting, Intro to Power of Sound, Vedic Chant 1, or by permission of Cline Owen.

Join Cline and classmates as they continue to build on the basics learned in the pre-requisite courses. This course will delve into chants that may be used for therapeutic purposes in the Yoga Therapy setting. Students will learn the meaning and suggested usage of chants in their therapeutic context. Yoga Sutra Studies

Pre-Requisite: NONE

Join JJ Gormley and classmates as we read the seminal work of yoga - Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra-s. In this class we will compare and contrast translations and commentary of each of the 196 sutra-s. You are welcome to join, even if you have not participated in previous sessions! It is recommended, but not necessary, that you have at least one translation of the Sutra-s on hand during the call.
